Introducing the white yam (Discorea rotundata) and ubi (Discorea alata), an ubi look-alike

White yam, a species native to West Africa, was obtained by PRCRTC [Philippine Root Crop Research and Training Center] from the International Inst. of Tropical Agriculture, propagated, characterized and evaluated together with ubi collections. In terms of tuber characters, white yam closely resembles white varieties of ubi, but it differs from ubi in terms of some foliage characters. A white yam clone, IR-005A, was found to have superior agronomic performance than ubi check entries in farmers' field trials and National Crop Testing variety trials. Acceptability of the eating quality of the white yam clone, however, ranged from inferior to comparable to that of ubi, depending upon the variety of ubi to which it was compared. It is suggested that the clone IR-0024 be considered for variety recommendation after further and definite evaluation of its acceptability to the consumer
