Preliminary investigations on the predatory potential of three mosquito larvivorous fishes exposed to copper sulphate

The effect of copper sulphate solutions was investigated on predatory efficacy of three fresh water fishes of Sindh, Pakistan. Oreochromis mossambicus consumed 87%, 3rd instar larvae of the mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus in 24 hours in the control group. In solutions of 0.25 mg/l Cu ++ and 0.75 mg/l Cu ++, 71% and 61% larvae were eaten, respectively. Poicelia latipinna consumed 17% and 16% mosquito larvae in copper solutions, compared to 87% in the control group. Notopterus notopterus consumed 100% larvae in control and 90-99% larvae in copper sulfate solutions. The feeding response of these fishes appears to be related to concentration of Cu ++ in water, but species specificity is also evident.
