Performance of growing pigs fed with varying levels of extruded food products as a replacement for corn in swine ration

Twenty four crossbred (F2- Largewhite x Landrace) growing pigs with an average weights of 36.5 kg were used in this study to determine their growth performance when fed with varying levels (33 percent, 67 percent, and 100 percent) of extruded food products as partial and total replacement for corn. The growing pigs were randomly alloted into four treatments following a completely randomized design with six pigs per pen. The results revealed that the average final body weight of pigs in Treatment 1 was 58.66. Treatments 2, 3 and 4 registered a final weight of 60.16, 59.50 and 61.00 kg, respectively. Experimental animals in Treatments 2 and 4 obtained the highest ADG with mean values of 0.65 and 0.62 kg, respectively. Moreover, experimental animals in treatments 2, 4, 1, and 3 registered a mean total gain in weight of 24.16, 24.00, 23.16 and 21.83 kg, respectively. Pigs from Treatment 4 consumed the biggest amount of feed with a mean value of 82.50 kg followed by Treatments 3, 2, and 1 with mean values of 80.83, 79.50, and 75.83 kg, respectively. Relative to feed conversion efficiency, mean values of 3.30, 3.91, 4.28, and 3.70 for Treatments 1, 2, 3, and 4 were observed, respectively. The mean feed cost per kilogram gain in weight yielded slight differences in Treatments 1, 2, 3, and 4 with mean cost of P28.71, P32.78, P36.65, and P31.41, respectively. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences among treatment means on initial, final daily gain and total gain in weight of the animals. This indicates that extruded food products at varying concentrations could be utilized as a grower feed in lieu of corn
