Terminal report of the study "Morpho-anatomical features of garlic bulbs (Allium sativum L.) at different stages of maturity in relation to postharvest behavior during storage at ambient"

This study was done to elucidate the morpho-anatomical features of garlic `Batangas Red' harvested at 90 to 115 days after planting (DAP) and relate them to postharvest behavior during storage at ambient for 180 days. The 90-DAP bulb was ovoid with a smooth surface and thick neck. The 105-, 110-, and 115-DAP bulbs were spherical-shaped with a ridged surface and narrow necks. However, the 110-DAP bulb had a wide neck than the 105-DAP bulb possibly due to the rain after 105 days resulting in the resumption of foliage growth. The papery sheath (with tracheary elements and rhomboidal crystals) and protective leaf were relatively thinner in the 90-DAP bulb. The protective leaf of the 90-DAP bulb had pores and emergences which were not observed in the older bulbs. On these bases, the 90-DAP bulbs were considered immature. As a consequence, weight loss was high and softening of the cloves was fast leading to rapid deterioration. Postharvest quality of the immature bulbs was inferior. It had low soluble solids and pyruvate content. Moreover, respiration was higher in immature bulbs. based on the results, garlic bulbs must be harvested not earlier than 105 days. Bulbs could be stored at ambient condition with minimal losses for a maximum period of 120 days
