Non-chemical treatment of bamboo strips for the manufacture of woven products

The effect of soaking bamboo strips in running water at varying time intervals on powder-post beetle and fungal attack under laboratory and field conditions was determined. The role of starch depletion on insect and fungal damage was likewise determined. Bamboo strips were soaked in running water for 1 day, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after which these were woven into mats. These were subjected to powder-post beetle and fungal attack and evaluated as to the degree of damage. The starch content of test samples was analyzed per soaking interval. Laboratory test showed that woven mats made of strips soaked for 1 week or longer were free from powder-post beetle attack after 4 months of test, while the unsoaked samples sustained 100 percent damage. Fungal growth, on the other hand, was not observed on samples soaked for 3 weeks. Under field conditions, samples soaked from 1 to 4 weeks remained sound for 9 months. After two years the mats showed no further fungal infection or powder-post beetle infestation
