Khan, M.A. (Quaid-i-Azam Univ., Islamabad (Pakistan). Dept. of Biological Sciences)
Crataegus spp. (hawthorns) are thorny trees and shrubs used in herbal medicine for the treatment of cardiac and other human diseases. The plants or their extracts are used in homeopathic and the western system of herbal medicine. They have worldwide distribution and, in Pakistan, three species are found in the northern areas of the temperate Himalayan range and in dry arid regions. Proper exploitation utilization of these herbal plants awaits attention from our medical profession.
