Effects of liming on organic carbon content in the mineral soil of a permanent grassland

The effects of liming and differentiation in the pH of the top layers of a mineral soil were analysed for course and changes of organic carbon content in three long-term meadow experiments, after 15 years. The effects of nitrogen fertilization in the form of ammonium nitrate on the behaviour of humus in the soil were also analysed. The carbonate form of the calcium fertilizer at a dose bringing the soil pH even to a value close to neutral did not cause humus loss. This process, under defined conditions, stimulates humus formation in the soil and may decrease organic carbon losses due to an excessive nitrogen loss
