Transport of photoassimilates linking functionally plant, as a whole system, is discussed as a target for different environmental stresses. Anatomical, physiological and biochemical asspects of phloem transport, phloem loading and unloading are taken into consideration. In the light of modern theories of asimilate transport some historical hypotheses are also shown, due to their input into the progress of transport science
