Effect of phosphorus concentration on growth, nutrient uptake, essential oil content and essential oil composition of Salvia fructicosa Mill. and Satureja thymbra L. in solution culture

Two separate experiments were conducted in the same glasshouse to investigate the effect of three different concentrations of phosphorus 17,34 and 68 ppm on growth, nutrient uptake and essential oil content and composition of Salvia fruticosa Mill. and Satureja thymbra L. in nutrient film culture NFT. The Nutrient Film Technique NFT isolation consisted of six channels in an unheated glasshouse, the same nutrient solution was applied in two different NFT units channels as replications. Cuttings from a single wild plant of Salvia fruticosa Mill. and Satureja thymbra L. were collected and put under mist propagation conditions during summer 1993. In November 1993, a total number of 30 rooted cuttings from Salvia fruticosa Mill, and 42 rooted cuttings from Satureja thymbra L. were transferred to an NFT installation. Growth parameters and essential oil content and quality as well as nutrient uptake were measured at the seed formation stage. In both plant species, the highest solution's phosphorus concentration P3 68 ppm decreased the mean shoot fresh weight, mean shoot dry weight, mean stem dry weight and mean leaf dry weight. The highest water and nutrient uptake was obtained during the seed formation stage for both plant species and phosphorus concentration of 34 ppm in the nutrient solution seemed to give the best plant growth. Neither the essential oil content nor the the essential oil composition of Salvia fruticosa Mill. and Satureja thymbra l. were affected by the solution's phosphorus concentration
