Studies on feeding of faba bean meal on growth and feed conversion efficiency in broilers

A study was conducted on broilers to evaluate the effective inclusion level of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) meal (FBM) replacing traditional broiler-feed ingredients like groundnut cake, fish meal (FM) and maize. The faba bean meal diets were supplemented with methionine-rich supplements like sesame cake, maize gluten meal or inorganic sulfate, and methionine per se. Sixteen isonitrogenous experimental diets were formulated for starting and finishing broilers using different levels of FBM (25-35percent). A feeding trial with two replicates per treatment (15-16 chicks per replicate) was conducted on 505 day-old commercial broiler chicks in starting (0-6 weeks) and finishing (6-8 weeks) phases. The maximum and significantly higher body-weight gain was recorded in dietary treatments containing 35 percent FBM and 4.5 percent FM, 25 percent FBM and 5.5 percent FM, and 30 percent FBM and 4.5 percent FM. Improved feed-conversion efficiencies were also obtained in these treatments. Higher values for performance index were recorded in the FM-supplemented groups. Inorganic sulfate supplemented groups gave better performance index than the methionine-supplemented groups. We conclude that faba bean meal could safely be incorporated up to 35 percent in broiler diets partially replacing maize, groundnut cake and fish meal
