Physiological evaluation of advance mutants of lentil in relation to growth, nitrate assimilation and photoharvest

An experiment was conducted on lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) mutants ML-432/8, ML-18, ML-20 and ML-22, and L-5 (the parent) in a field to evaluate nitrate reduction (NR) and photoharvest capacity in relation to growth potential and seed yield. The results demonstrated that seed yield did not depend on leaf area per plant, leaf area ratio (LAR) or specific leaf weight (SLW). However, a critical maximal value for SLW was detectable. Although mutant ML-18 showed high NR values, its seed yield was less than those with lower NR values (i.e., ML-432/8, ML-22 and ML-20). Chlorophyll and soluble-protein contents demonstrated positive relation with biomass productivity and seed yield, but leg-haemoglobin content may have a critical requirement level. Results suggested that for higher yield of lentil, different positive physiological factors may be combined. ML-432/8 maintained most of the positive factors with higher yield
