In parapotamon-type side arms of the Middle Danube the benthic fauna was studied in 1976-1978, prior to the construction of the Gabcikovo Hydroelectric Power Station. There were three dominant types of communities: the gravel substratum community, the community inhabiting assemblages of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), and the muddy bottom community. Various hydrological parameters were tested for their influence on the benthic fauna. The number of flow days within a 49 day period prior to collection of the samples was among the significant parameters which influenced the abundance and biomass of the dominant benthic fauna groups (Oligochaeta, Chironomidae) and zoobenthos totally
