Effect of water deficit during reproductives growth phase on growth and yield of blackgram

Blackgram productivity is often limit by the large variation in the amount and distribution of rainfall. When grown in rainfed condition, blackgram faces water stress during entire growing season particularly at the reproductive growth stage. Three blackgram cultivars differing in maturity were compared for response to moisture stress imposed during reproductive growth stage using a line-source sprinkler system. Field studies were conducted on the farm of the Phitsanulok Field Crops Experiment Station, Phitsanulok, from January to April 1992. Water deficit reduced seed yield with increased level of drought stress. Phitsanulok no.2 (PSL2) (medium duration cultivar) had higher crop growth rate and grain growth rate and also maintained lower canopy temperature during the pod filling stages than the long and short duration cultivars. Lack of water in the driest regime reduced the seed yield of PSL 2, BC-88 and U-thong 2 cultivars by an average of 35, 43 and 53 percent, resp. Among yield components, pod number was most affected by water stress.
