Management of soils on steeplands

Major problem of cultivating steeplands for agriculture is the severe soil loss leading to degradation and eventual loss of productivity. The construction of terraces, a common successful conservation practice for tree crops in the lower slopes appears to be inapplicable for steeplands. A major constraint is that cut terraces often result in the saprolyte layer becoming the surface soil. An additional factor is that such a system is impractical for individual small farms. A farming system approach with a combination of crops and the use of vegetative strips or a combined agrosilvicultural system seems to hold promise. In view of the lack of a definitive proven system, there is an urgent need to devise management systems to ensure sustained productivity on steeplands.
