Sixteen kinds of Thai traditional herbs; Ocimum sanctum white and red strains, Cassia alata, Tinospora cordifolia, Eclipta alba, Tinospora crispa, Psidium guajava, Clinacanthus nutans, Andrographis paniculata, Momordica charantina, Phyllanthus reticulatus, Phyllanthus pulcher, Phyllanthus acidus and 3 strains of Phyllanthus spp. including P. amarus, P. debelis, and P. urinaria were tested for their antibacterial efficacy against 10 strains of Vibrio spp. isolated from diseased shrimp using plate dilution method (Tragen 1983). Eleven species of the tested herbs showed antibacterial activities, however only two species of them (P. guajava and M. Charantina) showed the highest effective against Vibrio spp. Minimal inhibitory concentration of P. guajava was found at 0.625 mg/ml while the M. charantina was 1.25 mg/ml. Further studies were considerably carried on in various aspects of these two herbs in order to apply in the large scale of the experimentation.
