Germplasm collection and breeding of ornamental Curcuma for export

Ornamental Curcuma had a great potential for export. A germplasm collection of the genus was conducted. About 16 species were grown at Kamphaengsaen campus of Kasetsart University. Some could be used in breeding program and a few showed a good potential to be released. A methodology for axenic clonal propagation was established. Hybridization had to be perform with fresh pollen. A technique for germination was yet needed a great deal of investigation. However, manu species exhibited a degree of crossability. Colchicine treatment resulted in a low percentage of polyploidy.
