Effect of lead on the growth and water relations in young sugar beet plants

Using the water culture method, the effect of excess lead (Pb) on the water regime in young sugar beet plants was investigated. High Pb concentrations significantly decreased the dry matter mass of the above-ground plant parts and the root, leaf area, relative water content, and transpiration intensity. The osmotic potential of xylem sap, diffusion resistance of the stomata, free proline content, and soluble proline content all increased considerably as a result of adding various Pb concentrations. The decrease of relative plant water content under conditions of a reduced leaf area and transpiration intensity suggests that the presence of excess lead in the nutrient medium reduces water uptake and transport. In the presence of especially high lead concentrations the ratio of the above-ground mass to the root mass increased significantly, which may be one of the main reasons for the negative water balance in the plants treated with lead.
