Wild fruit species of Serbia [Yugoslavia]

Forest ecosystems cover a vast territory in Serbia (Yugoslavia). The greater part of Serbia (Yugoslavia) is in a forest zone. The biodiversity of the forest flora is very expressed. Among the several hundred forest species, fruit species, of which there are over 100, attract special attention. They represent very important natural resources, an inexhaustable genofund of extremely important species for a number of reasons. They represent important cenobites of forest phytocoenoses, often also of edificatory character. Moreover, they present an important natural source of wild fruit species, which present a genetic potential of vast importance for selection purposes and enriching cultivated fruit trees. Finally, wild fruit species yild fruit of most often excellent quality and high nutritive values, which are used in the human diet and for industrial processing. This study gives a brief survey of natural forest phytocoenoses in Serbia (Yugoslavia) and the zones they cover -zonal (climatogenic), extrazonal, and azonal vegetations. Special attention was paid to the distribution and presence of wild fruit species in forest communities of Serbia (Yugoslavia). The basic morphological, ecological, and biological characteristics for each species are given, as well as detailed data on their distribution in forest communities of Serbia (Yugoslavia), with a map and figure in colour.
