Hippocastani semen is a significant raw meterial in pharmaceutical industry - escine, tannins, flavonoids, fatty oil, cumarines. The aspect of the content of major secondary metabolites was studied in the aim of horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) mother tree selection and the establishment of sib lines with definite characteristics. The analysed seed was collected from fifteen horse chestnut trees at five different localities. The quantity of the content of the analysed secondary metabolites varies between individual trees and between localities. Based on the results of the analysis of variance it can be concluded that the variability is under genetic control to a significant degree.
