Investigations of iron bacteria populations in evaluation of drinking water condition and quality were performed upon "Ranney" wells located in the spring area "Brzan", encompassing a part of alluvial plane of the Velika Morava river, near Kragujevac, Serbia (Yugoslavia). The physicochemical analyses of well water confirmed that all conditions necessary for development of population of iron bacteria in drinking groundwater springs, being among the main causes of reduced water in-flow and decreased of specific production rate of the water-scooping objects, are satisfied. Several genera of iron bacteria were identified, such as: Siderocapsa, Gallionella, Leptothrix, Thiobacillus, Clonothrix and Crenothrix, which constitute usual biotic component in drinking groundwater. The correlation and the cause-consequence relationships existing along the line: raised content of iron and manganese - qualitative and quantitative composition of population of iron bacteria - ochre deposition - decrease specific production rate of the water-scooping object, were determined.
