Growing perspective of Chardonnay [grapevine] cultivar in Montenegro [Yugoslavia]

There is 120 ha area under Chardonnay cultivar clone R8 in plantations of Agrocombine "13. July" company, until in private sector we can hardly find it. Agroecological conditions are very favourable for growing this cultivar. Low level of rainfall during vegetative period was compensated by "drop by drop" irrigation system. The vines were grafted on Paulsen 1103 rootstock. Row spacing is 2.6-1.0 m. The plant density is 3800 vines per hectare. The vines are trained to a bilateral cordon with five wires as support. The bud loads were 32-36 buds reatained on two-twelve bud canes and three-four bud spurs. Chardonnay had 12.1 t per hectare yield on the average for three year period. Also it had high sugar content (22.8%) and total acid content (6.8 g/l) in grapes. The result of this investigation is that Chardonnay is, without question, the single most soughtafter white variety in Montenegro. It is difficult, although not impossible, to make a poor wine from it. The most common fault seems to be late picking.
