This paper includes consideration and scientific approach to the following: importance of genetic investigations for new genetic resources; importance of hybridization, mutation and polyploidy for the creation of new plant resources (cultivars and hybrids); sources of genetic resources by using wild species and types, and fruit biodiversity in natural population; contribution of genetic resources to increasing genetic potential for yield and plant improvement, genetic engineering and plant improvement; results in creating new cultivars and agricultural plant hybrids in Yugoslavia and their influence on yield expanding in plant production. In Yugoslavia, plant genetic resources have been enriched by new domestic cultivars and hybrids, a new possibilities are being created for increasing genetic potential for yield, for improving technological quality of products and increasing resistance to low temperature, drought and various diseases and pests. The impressive number of 1,219 new cultivars and hybrids created and accepted during the period 1964-1997, and their including in commercial production enabled significant increasing of yield per unit surface and total field crop production, vegetable production, fruit production and viticulture.
