In order to provide safe drinking water for population it is necessary to apply an adequate disinfection. Disinfection, in fact, is the most important step in water treatment. Disinfectants destroy microorganisms reacting simultaneously with organic matters present in water and creating new compounds. Those chemical compounds have harmful and long-term effects on public health (as in case with trihalomethanes). Results of laboratory analyses of samples taken from the Belgrade water supply system (Yugoslavia) in the period 1994-1997, show a satisfactory quality of drinking water. It is especially important to stress that the products that are the results of disinfection (such as trihalomethanes mentioned above) are within the limits set by the relevant legislation. It is necessary to continue with the application of the measures for the further improvement of the process of water purification (especially disinfection) and better quality of the network for water supply.
