The goal of this paper was to investigate the ion-exchange properties of natural zeolite clinoptilolite (Zlatokop deposit, Vranjska Banja, Serbia, Yugoslavia), and its maximally exchanged cationic forms (potassium-clinoptilolite CL-K, and calcium-clinoptilolite, CL-Ca), at 298K. Natural zeolite has a high affinity for potassium ions (0.168 mol K/100g). Also, natural clinoptilolite, as well as CL-K and CL-Ca have a very high effective ion-exhange capacities for toxic ammonium ions, and can be used in purification of wastewaters. A high affinity of clinoptilolite for ammonium ions is consequence of the diffusion through the zeolite channels without steric limitations and the ammonium ion binding by ionic and hydrogen bands with zeolite framework. The detected effective ion-exchange capacities are: 0.247 mol NH4+/100 g of potassium-clinoptilolite, 0.214 ml NH4+/100 g of natural clinoptilolite, and 0.222 mol NH4+/100 g of calcium-clinoptilolite. The best ionexchanger is potassium clinoptilolite.
