Performance and breeding of winter beet varieties with special regard to the internal quality

For the breeding of sugar beet varieties sown in autumn and harvested the following year, resistance to bolting is the main characteristic. The requiremen: regarding resistance to bolting depend on the climate and vary largely with regard to the region (Southern Spain, Southern Italy, California). Apart from this characteristic, a beet cultivated in winter should of course be highly performant in root yield, sugar content and the content of other substances, to guarantee profitable sugar beet cultivation. One of the remarkable features of the cultivation areas which are suited for winter beet are extreme weather conditions during the summer months. This has to be taken into account for harvesting, storage and transport. Nevertheless, the areas just achieve bad juice qualities, a subsequently bad sugar extraction and uneconomical sugar production. This talk will show, to which extent environment and genetics have an influence on the mentioned characteristics. Trials have shown that a longer vegetation period leads to more yield, but at the same time to less juice quality. Main emphasis is put on the importance of invert sugar and the possibilities offered by breeding to modify this characteristic.
