The BIOSCAN-BIOMASTER, the newly developed on-line sampling, monitoring and control system for the automation of aerobic, nutrient removing wastewater treatment plant (WWTP's), allows optimal control over aerobic nutrient removing WWTPs. Aerobic time phase, influent distribution and organic loading can be controlled by dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxygen respiration rate (OUR) monitoring. The biomass waste rate, biomass distribution and sedimentation state can be controlled by MLSS monitoring. Redox monitoring determines the anoxic/anaerobic time phases. The on-line monitoring and intelligent interpretation of these essential parameters allows automatic process adaptation of WWTP's to changing waste water characteristics, i.e. adaptive process control. Full scale BIOSCAN-BIOMASTER applications at the Macau municipal WWTP (300,000 P.E., single stage UNITANK), the two stage UNITANK with nitrogen removal at Cockerill Charleroi (11,000 P.E.), the single stage UNITANK (37,000 P.E) at Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and the two stage UNITANK at Haacht Brewery (65,000 P.E.) show the applicability of the BIOSCAN-BIOMASTER¬ in the adaptive control concept.
