Evaluation of carnation cultivars

Seventy cultivars of the standard carnation, Dianthus caryophyllus L. grown under plastic, were evaluated from 1986 to 1990 on the basis of yield, stem length and weight, disbudding and deshooting requirements and vase life of the blooms. Representative cultivars of the Sim group were compared with Mediterranean-type cultivars. Neither group of cultivars had an advantage over the other, although individual cultivars in each group were superior to others in one or more of the parameters investigated.
