The effect of feeding an amin acid supplement (Amino 2000) on the performance of dairy ewes, goats and cows.

Three trials using lactating Chios ewes (n=34/diet in the preweaning and n=38 in the postweaning period), Damascus goats (n=24/diet) or Friesian cows (n=13/diet) were carried out to study the effect of an amino acid (AA) supplement (Amino 2000) on milk yield and milk composition. Addition of the AA supplement resulted in a significant increase in milk yield in the cow trial only (cows: control 26.9, AA 30.1; goat: control 2.25, AA 2.38; ewes in the preweaning period: control 3.69, AA 3.89; ewes in the postweaning period: control 1.96, AA 2.13 kg/head/day). Other significant effects between diets were lower milk fat and BW loss of ewes (postweaning period) fed the AA supplement compared to those for the control diet. Amino 2000 increased returns above feed costs in the cow trial. Based on the present findings it can be concluded that the use of the AA supplement in the diet of dairy cows will not alter milk composition, but will improve milk yield and the economics of dairy cattle farmers.
