Cherry plum is a diploid species that grows wild and cultivated in Eurasia. It hybridizes easily with other plum species. Many successful crosses were made between Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. and Prunus salicina Lindl. in Russia, in Byelorussia and in Latvia. Cherry plum is a relatively new crop in Estonia and our main problem is to select cultivars, which would be adapted to the Estonian climate. Eight introduced cherry plum hybrid cultivars 'Alvis', 'Karminnaya Zhukova', 'Kubanskaya Kometa', 'Mara', 'Naidena', 'Podarok druzjam', 'Pramen', 'Vetraz' and one numbered selection Matyunin's 9-250 were evaluated for their winterhardiness, productivity and tree habit as well as for harvesting time and fruit quality characteristics at the Polli Horticultural Institute during 1995-1999. This paper contains the brief characteristics of cherry plum hybrid cultivars, the most winterhardy of which would probably be suitable for practical growing in Estonian conditions
