The use of Solanum brevidens is breeding of soft rot resistant potato clones

Koppel, M. (Jogeva Plant Breeding Inst., Jogeva (Estonia))
The programme for breeding of soft rot resistant potato varieties was started at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute in 1990. The programme started from true potato seeds obtained from backcrossing of a somatic hybrid (S. brevidens (PI 218228) + S. tuberosum (PI 203900)) with the S. tuberosum cv. Kathadin at University of Wisconsin Madison (Helgeson et al., 1993). Potato clones combining soft rot resistance with economically important properties have been created in result of backcrosses made during two following generations. Several clones obtained from backcrosses have soft rot resistance comparable with that of initial clone according to results of vacuum infiltration test. The clone R 1304-94 has the best combination of high level of soft rot resistance and economical properties. Unfortunately the sterility excludes further use of this clone in breeding programme. The highest breeding value has the clone R 1300-94 having superior economical properties, but a little lower level of soft rot resistance than that of R 1304-94. Clones R 179-94 and R1299-94 have good soft rot resistance but are inferior in economical properties
