Trends in the exploitation of Hungarian exporting possibilities, as well as in the increase and then cessation of beef imports forecast the necessity of developing the domestic production of beef cattle up to its possible maximum in respect to both quality and quantity. The utilisation of natural resources, such as the grassland of 1.3 million ha, and the by-products of arable lands as well as the environmental protection and rural development are also in favour of such development. In the case of the latter, the increase in natural livestock keeping based on grazing has to be aimed for. Requirements to quality are already severe at present, and will be in the future, which means new challenges for the beef cattle sector.
