Soil acidification, a type of chemical soil degradation process, is often responsible for the mobilization of several toxic elements, such as Al and Mn in the soil, and for their accumulation in the soil solution. A high concentration of dissolved Al or Mn is toxic to plants and environmental hazards may also arise due to their migration. Experiments were carried out on samples of the upper horizon of an acidic brown forest soil to study the release of Al and Mn into the soil solution as a function of the decrease in soil pH and the change in soil water content.
