Recent research on weedness of fields in crop in the eastern part of Latvia confirmed the necessity of intensified phytopatological control and more intensive fungicides application in the farms bordering on abandoned, weed infested areas. This fact may be an evidence of the connection between the composition of weed species and the spectrum of their diseases. In order to check the mentioned assumption a special computer program was developed using the unique phytopatological herbarium of J. Smarod. It was proved that the most distributed diseases of weeds in Latvia were different rusts, downy mildew and leaf spots. Mugwort Artemisia vulgaris L. had the greatest number of diseases. More than ten diseases were observed on the shoots of couch grass Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski. The diseases of weeds in particular cases might be the potential sources of infection for cultivated plants.
