For the improvement of the nutritional value of barley, hull-less mutant X-4 by Hiproly was used as a donor of high protein content in hybridization. Hulled and hull-less barley lines with increased protein content were developed. During 1996-1998 with changing meteorological conditions the new lines exceeded by 2.4-6.9 % the protein content of standard variety "Abava" (10.3-13.3 %). The grain yields of hulled and hull-less barley lines were 65.2-89.5 % and 60.6-78.7 % respectively in comparison with standard variety "Abava" (4.31-4.71 t haE-1). The protein yields of the best lines were 90.8-108.9 % compared to "Abava". The content of essential amino acids was higher than that of hulled parents.
