Alternative chemical control against storage pest of corn and mungbean

Results of the study showed that the use of naphthalene balls got comparable results with the use of Sevin in arresting the weevil infestation. Higher germination rate (85 percent) was obtained in both corn and mungbean using naphthalene balls compared with seeds treated with Sevin (corn-35 percent and mungbean - 60 percent). Tawas (alum) and tide ultra were found not effective. The use of naphthalene balls was cheaper and more environment friendly. It was recommended that seeds of corn and mungbean should be air dried up to 13-14 percent moisture content before storage. Five kilograms of naphthalene balls should be mixed with one sack (50 kg) of seeds during storage. This could last for six months maintaining good quality and viability. This is however, not applicable for seeds intended for food consumption
