Changes in the total lipid and total protein levels of the muscle, liver and brain of Oreochromis niloticus chronically-exposed to a fenvalerate-containing synthetic pyrethroid

Maturing Oreochromis niloticus (2-3 inches in length; 15-20 grams in weight) were exposed to sublethal concentrations of 0.01 ppm and 0.03 ppm fenvalerate-containing synthetic pyrethroid pesticide, for 28 days. Changes in the levels of total lipids and total proteins of the muscle, liver, and brain were determined quantitatively by spectrophotometric assay every 7th day during the 28-day period. Total lipids of muscle tissues significantly decline throughout the exposure period, with a peak decline on the 14 th day. In the liver, these were markedly elevated in a dose-dependent manner. An alternate slight and marked decline in the brain was noted. Total proteins of th muscle tissues exhibited an initial elevation, followed by a gradual decline in a pattern similar to that of its lipid content. Liver total proteins showed consistent decline throughout the exposure period. Brain total proteins showed general decline in a manner similar to the pattern of change in its lipid content. The results would indicate excessive utilization of energy stores and an impaired carbohydrate metabolism in the muscle tissues, accumulation of fat in the liver due to inhibited protein synthesis and an impaired lipid mobilization from the liver into the blood plasma. The biochemical changes showed that the synthetic-pyrethroid employed, even at sublethal concentrations, can cause deleterious effects in the hardly fish O. niloticus. It greatly affects the quality of the fish as a commendable source of lipid and protein
