Extruded mixture of sweetpotato and copra meal as partial direct replacement of corn in broiler and layer diets

A total of 180 broilers chicks (Anak strain) were distributed at random to 18 cages with ten chicks per cage and six cages per treatment, following a completely ramdomized design. The treatments were: Tr 1 (control-starter and finisher diets without extruded mixture of sweet potato and copra meal) ESPCM, (composed of 70 percent sweet potato meal and 30 percent copra meal, mixed and extruded together) control; Tr 2 - starter and finisher diets with 20 percent of corn replaced with ESPCM; and Tr 3 - starter and finisher diets with 30 percent of corn replaced with ESPCM. The broiler chicks were fed with their respective starter diets from 8 to 28 days and finisher diets from 29 to 42 days of age. The 54 pullets (Babcock strain, 26 weeks old) were also distributed at random to the three treatments with 18 birds per treatment (9 replicates per treatment, with two birds per replicate), in a completely randomized design. The results indicated that ESPCM could replace up to 30 percent of corn in the broiler diets without significant depression in feed intake, live weight gain and feed efficiency. The inclusion of ESPCM did not affect dressing percentage. The only noticeable difference was on color of the meat, wherein corn-fed chickens had creamy colored meat, while those receiving ESPCM had fleshy color. The results of the layer trial indicated that ESPCM could replace up to 30 percent of corn in the layer diets without significant depression in feed intake, egg production and egg weight at 30 percent level, egg efficiency dropped (P less than .05) by 8 percent.
