The tremendous diversity of indigenous orchids forms an important part of the country's natural wealth of plant genetic resources that must be conserved for present and future generations. Collecting of indigenous orchid germplasm have been initiated for conservation in the form of seeds in four provinces in Luzon [Philippines]. A total of 376 genotypes belonging to at least 23 genera have been collected in Laguna, Batangas, Quezon and Nueva Vizcaya. Fruit capsules or plants with either fruits or flowers were collected from natural habitats, home gardens, collection points and commercial gardens. The collected seeds were dried and their initial viability and germination tested, and stored under controlled storage conditions, immature capsules collected together with living plants were allowed to mature for future storage of seeds; and pollination was done on flowering plants to obtain seeds for future conservation. The conserved seeds can be regenerated in the future and re-introduced into the ecosystems from where they were collected if future needs no dictate
