Molecular diversity of Philippine traditional varieties collected from different regions in the Philippines

At present, there are about 2000 accessions of Philippine traditional varieties collected from the different regions of the country. This collection has been characterized agro-morphologically but its exact diversity has not been determined. In this study, 100 accessions were selected from collections obtained from 16 growing provinces (some of unknown origins) and analyzed for their molecular diversity using microsatellite and RAPD [Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA] molecular markers. Some of the accessions have the same name but were collected from different places. Based on the molecular analysis, many of the accessions with similar name clustered together indicating their genetic relationship (or similar origin). The other accessions showed different molecular phenotypes including many of those with identical names. The group of materials collected from different regions formed different clusters. Overall, the genetic diversity index of the accessions analyzed indicates that there is a broad genetic diversity. The implication of this study on the rice improvement in the Philippines and on the genebank management is discussed
