Method for grouping wood species for kiln drying based on some physical and anatomical properties

A method was devised for grouping Philippine wood species for kiln drying based on similar estimated drying rates. Regression analysis on the relationship between drying time and some physical and anatomical properties of samples with low, moderately high and high specific gravities representing easy, moderately difficult and very difficult to dry species resulted in the following regression equation with a coefficient of determination (R square) equal to 0.9732. Drying time (hr)=352.2502 SG + 0.5125 MC - 1767.1849 LW, where SG is nominal specific gravity, MC is the green moisture content in percent and LW is lumen width in mm. Drying rate was then computed as follows: Drying Rate (percent MC change/hr)=(IMC-FMC)/drying time, where IMC is the initial moisture content and FMC is the final moisture content (10 percent). Species with estimated drying rates higher than of 0.50, 0.40-0.50 and below 0.40 percent MC change/hr were classified as easy to dry, moderately difficult to dry and very difficult to dry, respectively. The drying time of any particular species from green to 10 percent MC at a constant condition of 150 deg F dry bulb temperature at 144 deg F wet bulb temperature can be estimated with a high degree of accuracy by the devised regression equation
