The various liver function tests such as activities of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and alkaline phosphatase (AP), and concentration of bilirubin increased significantly within 24 h to 48 h of administration of aflatoxin B1 as a single dose of 9.287 mg per chick and gradually decreased to the normal levels over the next 2 weeks. The activities of these serum enzymes and bilirubin content in chicks, kept on aflatoxin BI containing ration for 4 weeks, steadily rose significantly during the first week of administration and remained so until the end of the experiment. The aflatoxin-contaminated feed, therefore, results in hepatic dysfunction.
