Economic analysis of upland crop production systems in Lamdong Province, Vietnam
1999
Le Van Lang
The study described characteristics of crop production systems in Lamdong [Vietnam]. The change from a subsistence-oriented agriculture to a market-oriented one is attributed to the proper policy instruments instituted by the government. The opening of trade to the world market (i.e., main provincial cash crops) is an example of a success story. However, the market-oriented agriculture in the province led to facing more population pressure due to profitability of cash crops. The study confirmed the relationship between production system and market access, population density, and biophsyical condition. Good-market-access study location led farmers to hold more land, and stable topography allowed them to apply higher commercialized production system. Finally, food security is not a problem in the study sites, even in the low-market-access locations. The farmers have enough cash income to cover the food deficit from rice production. Household food consumption in the more commercialized location is equal to that in the less commercialized one in the study sites
