Survey of fishfarming, agriculture, industrial and household practices around the study area

Four sectors namely, domestic, agriculture, industrial, and aquaculture along the whole stretch of Imbang and Malisbog Rivers, Muyao creek and down to Barangay [village] Balaring [Philippines] were identified and surveyed. Among the 1,073 domestic respondents, the extent of the use of river are as follows: 10.6% for human waste disposal, 10.9% for washing clothes, 10.7% for animal waste, and 20.1 % for wastewater disposal. Among the 30 surveyed respondents in the agriculture sector, 70% discharged wastewater into the river. The two sugar centrals in the area used the river for dumping wastewater. One claimed partial release of the wastes in a nearby ricefield. According to the sugar central owner, the drained wastewater into the river are treated. Waste products such as bagasse, molasses are being used and not disposed into the river. Seven interviewed fishfarmers used the river as a source for washing clothes and drainage area for wastewater
