Grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency of inbred and hybrid rices

Results showed that optimum grain yields of most of the rice varieties tested during the wet season were obtained with 30 kg N/ha fertilizer/ha. However, the average grain yield of the inbred was 4.4 t/ha and 30% higher than yield of hybrid rice. The dominant yield components that influenced grain yield was the percentage filled spikelets. The percentage filled spikelets of the inbreds was 57% higher than the hybrids. Nitrogen content in the leaves increased with increasing levels of nitrogen at 22 days after transplanting (DAT) and 54 DAT, but the response was more pronounced at 54 DAT. Nitrogen content of the stem at 42 DAT and 54 DAT increased with N fertilizer application up to 90 kg N/ha. Straw N content increased only with 90 kg N/ha, while that of the grain responded up to 30 kg N/ha only. Nitrogen uptake of the four varieties tested increased with increased levels of nitrogen fertilizer up to 90 kg N/ha at 22 DAT. Agronomic nitrogen use efficiency was higher at the lower level of nitrogen apply. The percentage of agronomic nitrogen use efficiency of inbred rice was higher than the hybrid rice. Nitrogen recovery efficiency (NRE) of inbred and hybrid rices were similar at 22 DAT and 42 DAT. AT 54 DAT, PSB Rc14 and PSB Rc72H had the highest NRE. NRE responded up to 30 kg N/ha at 22 DAT, 90 kg N/ha at 42 DAT, and 120 kg N/ha at 54 DAT
