Field infestation and chemical control of the mango pulp weevil, Sternochetus frigidus (Fabr.), in Palawan [Philippines]

The field infestation, intra-tree distribution and relative abundance of the mango pulp weevil, Sternochetus frigidus (Fabr.), were studied at Brooke's Point, Palawan [Philippines] in 1996. The efficacy of 4 insecticides against the pest was also determined. The start of field infestation was as early as 55 days after flower induction when the fruit averaged 29 grams in weight. Statistically there was no significant difference between height of tree and canopy direction on the mean number of weevils collected from `carabao' mango fruits in 3 trees. The highest number of weevils was observed in the month of June. The insecticides cyfluthrin at 50 ml, carbaryl at 250 g and fenvalerate at 310 ml per 100 L water provided good control over the weevil
