[Use of male breeding stock of the Barrosa breed of bovines and determination of their inbreeding [Portugal]]

In this study, data from Barrosa Cattle Breed Herd-Book relating to total bulls used for reproduction from 1981 (beginning of Zootechnic Registration) to 1996 were analysed to evaluate age structure, culling age, degree of reproducers utilisation, inbreeding coefficient and additive relationship. In the father segment the age structure was determined for 1993 and 1994 (4,5+-2,44 years and 4,4+-2,56 years, respectively) as well as the age in bulls culling (4,6+-2,05 years). Considering the utilisation of the reproducers in 1993 and 1994, we conclude that: (i) the number of calves registered per bull (24/25 calves) was low and variable; (ii) in 1994 one of the artificial insemination bulls was responsible for the larger number of registered calves (193); (iii) Vila Verde, Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte da Barca, have more than 50% of the total registered calves; (iv) there is no calving sazonality for the breed. The pedigrees of the 612 bulls enrolled in the Zootechnical Registration were elaborated, and the inbreeding coefficients and the relationships between them were determined. Foram analisados dados recolhidos no Livro Genealogico da Raca Bovina Barrosa, relativos a totalidade de touros utilizados entre 1981 (ano da constituicao do Registo Zootecnico para este raca) ate 1996. Os resultados obtidos permitiram avaliar a estrutura etaria, a idade a reforma, o grau de utilizacao, o coeficiente de consanguinidade e o parentesco aditivo dos touros reprodutores. Resumimos a estrutura etaria para 1993 e 1994 (4,5+-2,44 anos e 4,4+-2,56 anos respectivamente) e a idade na reforma de touros (4,6+-2,05 anos). Considerando o grau de utilizacao dos reprodutores nos anos de 1993 e 1994, destacamos: (i) o reduzido numero de vitelos registados por touro (24/25 vitelos); (ii) a supremacia de um touro utilizado em inseminacao artificial, que em 1994 foi responsavel pelo maior numero de vitelos registados (193); (iii) a contribuicao em percentagem superior a 50% de tres concelhos, no total de vitelos registados (Vila Verde, Arcos de Valdevez e Ponte da Barca); (iv) a ausencia da sazonalidade de partos para esta raca. Elaboramos as genealogias de 612 touros inscritos no Registo Zootecnico, calculamos os coeficientes de consanguinidade e as suas relacoes de parentesco, detectando-se consanguinidade em 1,8% dos touros e a evolucao crescente do quantitativo de animais com genealogia
