Two sites with high content of heavy metals have been chosen on agricultural land in Slovakia: 1. Nalepkovo, with increased Hg content as a result of geochemical anoma-lies and anthropic activities (ore mining), 2. Domaniky, with increased Pb and Cd contents as a result of anthropic activities. At these sites were determined physical and chemical properties of soil horizons. Adsorption of heavy metal ions on the surface of soil solid phase has been ascertained by batch tests. The experiments showed that heavy metal ions adsorption falls with increasing soil profile depth and acidity. Sorption of heavy metal ions decreases gradually as follows: S(Pb)S(Hg)S(Cd). The desorption of heavy metal ions, with simulated influence of acid precipitation, was detected in soil columns using distilled water with varying pH values. The results showed that the concentration of Cd, Pb, Hg ions released from soil sorption complex had increased as a result of increased acidity. Acid precipitation can significantly influence the mobility of heavy metal ions and their accumulation in plants and percolation into surface or ground water
