After cutting the plants are "starving" and gradually drying. This period should be as short as possible and the initial water content of the swathed crop (about 800 g/g) should be reduced to 300 - 550 g/kg to prevent the nutrient losses. The paper presents the results of field and laboratory trials testing a swath conditioner integrated into a disc mower. The test results showed that the conditioner MD 5-K markedly destructed the plants and the leaf area at a range of 86.8 - 95.6% of the conditioned swath. Such a plant destruction is sufficient for the required swath drying. A statistically significant impact of the working parts of the rotor conditioner was found at the treated swath in seminatural grassland. A comparison under identical conditions showed that the swaths treated by the mechanical conditioner MD 5-K dried 3. - 3.5-times faster than those without conditioning to the hay storage humidity od 20%
