Studies on common rust disease of sugarcane in humid tropical Indonesia

Common rust, Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow, has become a major threat in some of the new sugarcane growing areas of Indonesia. Its effects were studied in Lampung, Southern Sumatra in the humid tropical zone of the archipelago, in varieties Q 90 and Q 96. Rust infection was related to plant age, being maximum in plant cane in 3-5 months crop, and in first ratoon in 2-4 months old crop. Peak infection did not coincide with maximum rainfall. Among the fungicide treatments evaluated against rust, mancozeb and mancozeb+carbendazim were the most effective in controlling the disease. Plant height and stalk diameter at the second lowest internode and cane yield were significantly reduced by the disease while Brix, sucrose content and sucrose recovery were not affected. Reduction in cane and sugar were assessed at 12.2 percent and 13.4 percent in Q 90, a variety highly susceptible to rust while corresponding data were 7.5 percent and 7.2 percent in the slightly susceptible variety Q 99. To limit damage caused by rust, resistant varieties should be cultivated in the new sugarcane growing areas such as Lampung.
