Effect of feeds and seasons on performance of beef cattle in Changwat Uthai Thani
1997
Umaporn Tirawat
Forages, concentrate, feed ingredients, soil, water and plasma of cattles were randomly taken from 5 farms each in Amphur Lansak, Huaykot and Banrai, Changwat Uthai Thani, during dry and wet season. As for blood plasma, forty seven samples from jugular vein were taken from 1-1.5 years old Brahman crossbred beef cattles during the two seasons. Analysis of feed samples revealed that rice straw was lower CP but higher ash, NDF and ADF than those in ruzi grass and hamata legumes. CP content in ruzi grass during dry season (3.89-4.71 percent) was lower (P0.05) than wet season (5.66-6.21 percent). Hamata legumes was higher CP than ruzi grass and rice straw. All samples were analyzed for Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn. It is observed that Mn in ruzi grass, Cu in rice straw, Fe and Zn in soil, Mn in water and K in plasma during dry season were ranged 70.42-78.06, 1.17-1.32, 570-653 and 8.27-25.68 mg/kg 1.04-1.68 mg/l and 16.58-18.08 mg percent, respectively while wet season were lower than those (P0.05). K in ruzi grass, Zn in water and Ca, P, Cu and Fe in plasma during dry season were ranged 0.58-0.81 percent, 0.01-0.06 mg/l and 6.56-7.52, 5.06-6.47, 55.00-62.65 and 258.47-324.70 micro g percent, respectively while wet season were higher than those (P0.05). Mineral analysis in soil indicated probable inadequacy of P, Mg, K, Cu and Zn. Plasma Ca and Cu were inadequate. This found that plasma minerals were affected by locations and seasons and tended to effect the animal body weight. The levels of BUN and BG in cattle ranged 15.27-20.57 and 48.98-59.28 mg percent and AST 11.19-15.00 IU/ml were within normal levels. The average of body weight, heart grith, body length, shoulder height, hip height and body condition score of Brahman crossbred cattles were 276.16 kilograms, 152.94, 128.33, 119.35, 126.48 cm and 5.53, respectively. Of all the parameter measures, correlation between body weight and heart girth were higher at R*[2)
